The Iran’s Football Federation canceled today its participation in the FIFA Congress in Vancouver following allegations of mistreatment by Canadian immigration authorities.
This diplomatic boycott, occurring just 40 days before the FIFA World Cup, escalates logistical and political tensions between Tehran and the international body amidst concerns over the safety and respect for its national team in North America.
The Iranian Football Federation (IFF) officially announced its withdrawal from the FIFA Congress in Vancouver on April 30, after its delegation denounced alleged mistreatment by Canadian immigration officials.

The IFF President, Mehdi Taj, accompanied by Secretary-General Hedayat Mombeini and his deputy Hamed Momeni, decided to cancel their attendance and return to Tehran after facing what they described as “inappropriate behavior” at Toronto airport.
This significant diplomatic incident unfolds at a critical juncture, merely 40 days ahead of the highly anticipated start of the World Cup.
Despite the officials possessing valid visas for entry into Canadian territory to participate in the assembly of the 211 associated federations, the alleged treatment received at the airport terminal prompted this decisive rupture. This action marks a new chapter of friction in the already complex landscape of international football logistics and underscores the persistent political tensions that permeate the realm of global sports.
The absence of the Iranian representation in Vancouver fundamentally undermines the institutional stability that had been painstakingly cultivated months prior. A recent rapprochement between FIFA President, Gianni Infantino, and the leadership of the national team appears to have been severely jeopardized by this migratory altercation. The situation immediately reignites profound doubts regarding the operational conditions and the overall environment in which the Persian delegation will navigate its immediate international commitments.
At the core of this escalating conflict lies a more profound issue: the guarantees of security and logistical support for matches that Iran is scheduled to play within United States territory during the upcoming World Cup.
Tehran had previously submitted a formal request to relocate these matches to alternative venues in Mexico, citing legitimate and pressing concerns over the protection and well-being of its players and coaching staff. However, FIFA categorically rejected any modifications to the official schedule, insisting on maintaining the matches in the United States. This firm stance by FIFA is viewed by the Iranian delegation as a disregard for their specific security needs and a failure to adequately address their appeals.

While FIFA continues to staunchly insist on upholding its original plan for host cities and match schedules, the recent incident in Canada significantly complicates the essential dialogue required to ensure an equitable and fair development of the competition.
