Iran has categorically rejected the recent sanctions imposed by the European Union (EU) and the United Kingdom (UK), which target several Iranian individuals and entities accused of supplying drones and missiles to Russia.
Esmaeil Baghaei, spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry, described these sanctions as “unrealistic and unfounded” in a statement released on Monday.
He criticized the actions of the EU and UK as “unjustified” and contrary to international law, particularly regarding human rights standards.
In his remarks, Baghaei emphasized Iran’s commitment to a diplomatic resolution of the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, reiterating Tehran’s opposition to the war. He pointed out that countries like the UK and Germany are complicit in supplying lethal arms to Israel, which he accused of committing “genocide and aggression” in Gaza and Lebanon.
Baghaei also asserted Iran’s “inalienable” right to engage in military cooperation with other nations, including Russia, as part of its national interest and sovereignty.
He warned that Iran reserves the right to take proportional countermeasures against what it deems “illegal and unjustified” sanctions from the EU.
The sanctions, announced on Monday, include travel bans and asset freezes on seven individuals and seven organizations linked to Iran’s alleged military support for Russia.
Among those affected are senior officials from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and Iran Air, which is now restricted from operating flights to Europe.
