Iran’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Amir Said Iravani, rejected the United States’ plan to rebuild Gaza in exchange for the permanent displacement of Palestinians during his speech at the UN Security Council session held on Tuesday, February 18, in New York.

Iravani called the proposal a violation of international law and an attack on fundamental human rights, emphasizing that Gaza rightfully belongs to the Palestinian people and condemning the U.S. colonial plan.

He also criticized the U.S. support for Israel, accusing Washington of shielding genocide crimes committed in Gaza through its use of the veto power at the Security Council.

The Iranian diplomat stated that multilateral institutions are suffering a credibility crisis due to the selective application of international law and the unilateral sanctions imposed by the United States and its Western allies.

Additionally, he questioned the current structure of the Security Council, arguing that it does not reflect global power shifts or the legitimate demands of the Global South. He called for multilateralism reform to ensure fairer and more democratic governance.

Iravani’s statements come in response to the announcement made by former U.S. President Donald Trump on February 5, in which he proposed that the U.S. would take control of Gaza, but only if Palestinians permanently abandoned their land. The proposal was widely condemned by the international community, human rights organizations, and Washington’s allies.
