On Monday, the Iranian Army announced the addition of approximately 1,000 new strategic drones to its fleet to strengthen the country’s defense and deterrence capabilities.

Footage broadcast showed Iran’s Defense Minister, General Aziz Nasirzadeh, and the Army’s Chief Commander, General Abdul Rahim Mousavi, inspecting the drones at an undisclosed location.

This move is part of an effort to enhance the nation’s defense and deterrence capabilities. These unmanned aerial vehicles boast a range of over 2,000 kilometers, high destructive power, exceptional flight endurance, and complete autonomy, requiring no control from start to finish.

The announcement coincides with a series of military exercises Iran has conducted in recent days, including air defense drills near the key nuclear facilities in Natanz and Fordo.

These measures come amid Israeli and U.S. threats of a possible strike on Iran’s nuclear centers if the country takes steps toward developing nuclear weapons.

Adding to the tension are potential frictions between Iran and the U.S. with the inauguration President-elect Donald Trump on January 20. During his first term (2016-2020), he withdrew in 2018 from the nuclear agreement signed between Tehran and global powers three years earlier and reimposed sanctions on Iran.

Since then, Iran has increased its uranium enrichment level to 60%, approaching the 90% threshold required for nuclear weapons production.

However, on Monday, Tehran is set to hold new talks about its nuclear activities with Germany, France, and the United Kingdom in Geneva, aiming to negotiate a new agreement that could lead to the lifting of sanctions.
