The Shahid Rajaee port is the country’s most modern and important port, handling more than 55% of Iran’s exports and imports, 70% of its port traffic, and more than 80% of its container traffic.
The explosion at the port occurred around noon on Saturday, after several containers, reportedly carrying chemical materials, caught fire at one of the docks.
“Twenty-eight people have died so far in the explosion at Shahid Rajaee port,” reported the head of the Iranian Red Crescent, Mohammad Javad Kolivand, who confirmed that about 190 people remain hospitalized, 20 of whom are in intensive care units.
The Iranian president expressed his “deep sorrow and solidarity with the victims” last night on X, and ordered an investigation into “the situation and causes of the incident.”
To that end, he sent Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni to the area as his special representative to closely examine the circumstances of the accident.
This morning, Iranian government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani announced that the situation is under control and that the flames had been 80% contained. However, the wind continues to hinder efforts to extinguish the fire, and new small explosions have occurred at the Shahid Rajaee port.
