According to IS propaganda organs, three fighters “attacked a concentration of Shiites performing their annual rituals in a Shiite temple in the Al Wadi al Kabir area of the capital”, referring to the day of Ashura, the most important for the Shia branch.

The fighters “opened fire with machine gun on the Shiites and then clashed with the Omani forces that arrived at the site, and the clashes continued until this morning (Tuesday),” the group said without giving further details.

In total, according to the informant, the attack resulted in “more than 30 Shiites killed and injured, and five members of the Omani forces, including a police officer”.

Although this information given by IS propaganda appears to be false, because the Omani police claimed to have only 6 dead, including one officer, and 28 injured.

The Embassy of Pakistan in Oman identified four dead as its nationals and another 30 are in hospitals in the Persian Gulf country receiving treatment, according to a statement in its official profile in X.

Videos circulated during the night on social networks showed images of police patrols near a mosque in Al Wadi al Kabir and amid the sound of gunfire in an event that has shaken the Pakistani community in the country.

Despite being a peaceful country, Oman has been threatened by different terrorist groups based in the Persian Gulf.
