On Saturday UNIFIL reported further Israeli violations against its positions in Lebanon, including the forcible entry of Israeli tanks through its main gate.

“An initial review showed that an army tank which was trying to evacuate wounded soldiers while still under fire retreated several metres back towards a UNIFIL post. During the incident, the army did not pose any danger to UN forces”, admited today the Israeli army.

At 6:40 a.m., UN peacekeepers reported close gunfire and smoke in the camp. Despite wearing protective masks, 15 of them suffered skin irritation and gastrointestinal problems, which required medical treatment.

UNIFIL reminded the Israel Defense Forces (IOF) of their obligations under international law, in particular UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which guarantees the safety of UN personnel and the inviolability of its facilities.

The statement emphasized that unauthorized entry into a UN position is a serious violation of international law and that any deliberate attack on peacekeepers violates international humanitarian law.

In addition, the peacekeeping force requested explanations from the IOF for the “shocking violations” and reiterated that any restriction on their freedom of movement would also violate Resolution 1701

As part of its military campaign against Lebanon and the Gaza Strip, Israel confirmed this Sunday that it has attacked in recent hours nearly 200 alleged targets of the Lebanese resistance Hezbollah in southern and inner Lebanese territory.
