On Wednesday, the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) accused the Israeli armed forces of having opened “direct and apparently deliberate fire” on one of its positions in Lebanon.

UNIFIL reminded the Israeli army and all parties involved in the conflict “of their obligation to ensure the safety of UN personnel and property, and to respect the inviolability of its installations at all times.”

In a reactions to this development, Israeli Foreign Affairs Minister Israel Katz said that Israel has “no intention of harming” the blue helmets but linked them to the Lebanese Shia Islamist group Hezbollah.

“It uses UNIFIL personnel as ‘human shields’, deliberately attacking army soldiers from locations close to UNIFIL positions to create friction,” he said via social media.

On Saturday, UNIFIL reported that one of its soldiers was wounded by Israeli fire at its headquarters in Naqoura, bringing the number of peacekeepers injured in incidents over three days to five.

Three days ago, the UN mission also reported that two Israeli tanks entered its position in southern Lebanon, leaving 45 minutes after UNIFIL protested through the liaison mechanism. Later, UNIFIL reported several shots fired 100 meters north of the base that emitted smoke, causing at least 15 mission personnel to experience skin irritation and gastrointestinal reactions.

UNIFIL is in Lebanon in accordance with United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701, which ended the 2006 war between Israel and Hezbollah.
