At least four of the nine Gazans killed this Saturday by Israeli drone strikes in Beit Lahia, northern Gaza, are media workers, the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate confirmed.

“The Syndicate condemns the attack on a media and humanitarian aid team in Gaza and demands accountability for the (Israeli) occupation,” the group said today in a statement.
According to this organization, four of the nine dead are: Bilal Abu Matar, Palestinian editor, as well as Mahmud al Sarraj, Bilal Aqila and Mahmud Asleem, cameramen.
It is believed that at least three of the other victims were aid workers who were part of an aid distribution team with a vehicle from the Al Khair Foundation, based in the United Kingdom, but it is not yet confirmed whether or not they were affiliated with this organization.
“Journalists are being subjected to a deliberate campaign of assassinations and direct executions, in a blatant attempt to silence the truth and prevent media coverage of the atrocities being committed against the civilian population,” the Syndicate continued, calling it a “war crime and a flagrant violation of International Law.”
Since the beginning of the war in Gaza in October 2023, and despite the ceasefire, at least 170 journalists and media workers have been killed: 162 Palestinians – not counting the four from today -, two Israelis and six Lebanese, according to data from the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ).
The Israeli army, in a statement and without providing evidence, confirmed that it attacked two alleged militants who they say were operating “a drone that posed a threat to the troops” in Beit Lahia, as well as bombing a vehicle in which other people were traveling who picked up the drone from the ground.
In addition, this afternoon a Gazan child also died from an Israeli gunshot to the head in Beit Lahia, while a woman was injured in the back, according to medical sources cited by the official Palestinian news agency, Wafa. The Israeli army has not yet commented on this.
