“The sounds of explosions heard in Palmyra were caused by an Israeli attack targeting residential buildings and the industrial city,” reported the SANA news agency.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights confirmed that airstrikes carried out by Israeli warplanes targeted a site in the Palmyra area, located in the eastern part of Homs province.

“At approximately 1:30 p.m. today, the Israeli enemy launched an air attack from the direction of al-Tanf area, targeting a number of buildings in Palmyra City in the Syrian Desert, led to the martyrdom of 36 people, the injury of more than 50 others, and significant material damage to the buildings and the surrounding area,” the Syrian Defense Ministry confirmed.

In recent weeks, Israel has significantly increased its attacks on Syrian territory, particularly targeting the capital city of Damascus and Al Quseir, a border area with Lebanon.

These attacks, which have resulted in dozens of civilian casualties, have been justified by the Zionist state, claiming they are aimed at the Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah.

Palmyra, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980, houses the monumental ruins of a grand city that was one of the most important cultural centers of antiquity. The city was influenced by various civilizations, including classical Greek, Roman, and Persian.
