Early on Wednesday, the IDF raided the Awni al-Harthani school in Beit Lahia, northern Gaza, where Palestinian refugees were staying. This action took place in the context of a 54-day military siege, according to Palestinian media reports.

The IDF tried to justify the operation by claiming that its objective was to eliminate Palestinian militiamen present in the area. The raid included airstrikes and close fighting, although no details were provided on the number of militiamen involved or the casualties resulting from the clashes.

Local witnesses reported that the raid began at about 04:30 local time (02:30 GMT), when the army fired rockets at the school. Military vehicles subsequently surrounded the building and ordered those inside to evacuate.

The women and children were taken to Kamal Adwan Hospital, also in Beit Lahia.

This attack is in addition to the long-running Israeli military campaign in northern Gaza, which includes sieges of cities such as Jabalia and Beit Hanoun.

Since the start of this offensive on October 7, in response to attacks by the Islamist group Hamas that left nearly 1,200 dead in Israel, more than 44,300 Palestinians have lost their lives, according to health authorities.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) recently estimated that between 65,000 and 75,000 people still remain in the besieged region, while more than 100,000 have fled due to violence and the deep humanitarian crisis caused by Israel’s restrictions on access to aid.

The situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate, with a high human cost and an increasing international call to address the humanitarian crisis affecting thousands of civilians caught in the middle of the conflict.
