Tensions in the Middle East have escalated following recent airstrikes by Israel on Yemeni territory, which targeted civilian infrastructure including the international airport in Sana’a and the port of Ras Issa. According to reports from Houthi-controlled television channel Al Masirah, these attacks resulted in the deaths of at least three individuals and left eleven others injured.

The strikes, which occurred on Thursday, were part of a broader warning issued by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding potential reprisals against the Houthi rebels for their missile launches into Israeli territory. The attacks reportedly took place in two distinct waves, affecting not only the airport but also energy plants and ports along the Red Sea coast, including Hodeida and Salif.

Notably, during the attack on Sana’a’s airport, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), was present and preparing to board a flight. He confirmed that a member of his crew sustained injuries and that two fatalities occurred within the terminal. Dr. Ghebreyesus also reported significant damage to critical infrastructure, including the air traffic control tower and boarding area.

In response to Israel’s military actions, Houthi leaders have reiterated their unwavering support for Palestine and the people of Gaza who are enduring an ongoing siege. They have characterized their missile strikes against Israel as acts of solidarity with Palestinian resistance. Over the past year, Houthis have claimed responsibility for more than 200 missile launches and 170 drone attacks targeting Israeli positions.

The situation remains tense as both sides prepare for further escalation. The Houthis have vowed not to abandon their support for Palestine despite facing military retaliation from Israel. As regional dynamics continue to shift, calls for de-escalation and dialogue become increasingly urgent to prevent further loss of life and humanitarian crises in both Yemen and Palestine.

This latest round of violence underscores the complex interplay of regional conflicts and highlights the dire need for international intervention to protect civilians caught in the crossfire.
