Israel Violates Ceasefire with Incursion into Southern Lebanon

In a significant breach of the ceasefire established at the end of November, Israeli troops have launched an incursion into southern Lebanon, escalating tensions in the region. This military action comes on the heels of recent airstrikes by Israel targeting civilian infrastructure in Yemen.

Local reports indicate that alongside intense bombardments, the Israeli military has also abducted a Lebanese citizen, prompting strong condemnation from Lebanese authorities. In response to these incursions, the Lebanese Army has reinforced its presence in affected areas and is coordinating efforts with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) to monitor and counteract Israeli actions.
The Lebanese Army issued a statement asserting that “the Israeli enemy continues to violate the ceasefire agreement,” detailing how Israeli forces penetrated several points in the regions of Qantara, Adshit al-Qusayr, and Wadi al-Hujayr.
The statement further emphasized UNIFIL’s ongoing calls for the timely withdrawal of Israeli forces and for the deployment of Lebanese armed forces in southern Lebanon, alongside full implementation of UN Resolution 1701 as a comprehensive path toward peace.
Regarding the abducted citizen, reports from PressTV confirm that Hussam Fawaz was taken during the incursion in Wadi al-Hujayr. He was later handed over to UNIFIL before being transported by a Lebanese army ambulance for treatment due to a gunshot wound sustained from Israeli fire.
This latest escalation highlights the fragile security situation along the Lebanon-Israel border and raises concerns about potential further violence. As both sides navigate this tense landscape, international observers are calling for immediate dialogue and adherence to ceasefire agreements to prevent further deterioration of peace in the region.
