The Deputy Prime Minister also demanded, by means of a letter addressed to the lawyer Gali Beharev Miara, legal adviser of the Government, that the law establish criminal sanctions for Israeli citizens who act and promote «the imposition of international sanctions on Israel, its leaders, members of the security forces and against citizens of Israel».
«Urgently give me a memorandum of law that establishes that actions by Israeli citizens to promote or encourage the imposition of sanctions on Israel, will constitute a criminal offence with severe punishment», Levin requested.
The petition is part of the response to a controversy promoted by the editor of the newspaper Haaretz, Amos Shokan, against Israel and in support of the Palestinian Resistance Movement Hamas, Which triggered ministries and government organizations to break contact with the newspaper.
Shokan’s words were revealed in London, the capital of the UK, on Oretz 14 broadcasts. The editor of the newspaper referred to Hamas as freedom fighters and called on the world to impose sanctions on Israel.
After the event became known, Israeli ministries and institutions demanded that all links with the newspaper be cut.
