The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) carried out airstrikes on Monday night, targeting a weapons storage facility in the port city of Tartus, western Syria.
According to an IDF statement, the strikes hit a former Syrian Army military site in Qardaha, approximately 60 kilometers north of Tartus.
While no casualties have been reported, Syrian Civil Defense teams are working to assess the extent of the damage, according to SANA, the Syrian state news agency.
This latest attack is part of an ongoing Israeli air campaign against Syrian military infrastructure since December. Analysts suggest that Israel is seeking to extend its military presence in Syria and exploit its strategic resources, contributing to further fragmentation of the war-torn country.
Just last Tuesday, Israeli forces struck additional military installations in southern Syria, following Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s demand for the “complete demilitarization” of the region.
Netanyahu confirmed that Israeli forces would remain in the buffer zone in the occupied Golan Heights for an “unlimited period,” despite initially stating their presence would be temporary.
The United Nations and several West Asian nations have condemned the Israeli strikes, calling for the withdrawal of Israeli forces and the respect of Syria’s sovereignty.
