‘Thousands of families are currently crossing the border into Syria, struggling to find shelter for their children,” said Caredda.

On Thursday, the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) denounced that over 276,000 Lebanese and Syrians living in Lebanon have been forced to flee to Syria due to Israeli attacks.

“Thousands of families are currently crossing the border into Syria, struggling to find shelter and basic necessities for their children,” said Angelita Caredda, NRC’s Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa.

“We are facing a third humanitarian crisis in the region in less than twelve months,” she emphasized, referring to the current situation in a region also destabilized by the Israeli offensive against Gaza.

Syria is currently in its thirteenth year of a civil war that has created a humanitarian need for 16.7 million people, according to United Nations estimates from 2023.

For this reason, Caredda highlighted that the forced displacement of people from Lebanon to Syria “is a crisis within multiple crises.”

“We can no longer view the situation in the Middle East as a series of isolated conflicts and refugee crises,” she added.

“The political failure risks destabilizing an entire region and condemning millions of people to disaster. Global diplomacy must move beyond empty rhetoric and unfulfilled promises,” the NRC’s Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa pointed out.
