Mawasi is home to thousands of Palestinians surviving in crowded tents.

In the early hours of Thursday, Israeli occupation forces killed 17 people in the humanitarian zone of Mawasi, located along the southern and central coasts of Gaza.

The first attack claimed 11 lives, including that of General Mahmud Salah, director of police in southern Gaza, who had served in the institution for over 30 years.

In the second attack, Israeli forces killed six people while bombing the Interior Ministry building in Khan Yunis, which functioned as a police station for filing complaints and detaining offenders.

The area designated by Israel as the “humanitarian zone” of Mawasi, a frequent target of its bombings, has turned into a cluster of tents where thousands of Gazans share a single toilet, lack access to drinking water and electricity, and endure rain, cold, and the spread of diseases and infections.

In recent months, Gaza’s police have carried out several operations in the southern part of the Strip against groups looting humanitarian aid trucks entering the enclave.

The looting of vehicles transporting humanitarian aid has become a growing issue in Gaza, worsening in recent months. Police have launched operations to apprehend those involved in the theft of these trucks, which sometimes occurs just meters away from Israeli forces stationed in the southern part of the enclave.

The Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) condemned both bombings and noted that the attacks seek to deepen the crisis in the enclave, which has been subjected to constant Israeli fire since October 2023.

“With the assassination of the police director, the Israeli occupation forces continue their efforts to spread chaos in the Gaza Strip and deepen the humanitarian suffering of the population,” said the Hamas political bureau.

Since October 7, 2023, Israeli occupation forces have injured 108,438 people and killed at least 45,581 Palestinians in Gaza. Approximately 70% of the fatalities have been women and girls.
