The former right-wing candidate for Venezuela’s presidency, Edmundo González Urrutia,  said on Friday that his departure from Venezuela is only temporary, a matter that the president of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez, defined as a violation of asylum rules.

During a hearing at the La Toja-Vínculo Atlántico Forum, the ultra-right affirmed his claim to return to Venezuela and asked the Government of Spain that his office be recognized according to “the popular will of eight million Venezuelans”.

Thus, he continues to insist on being elected as the country’s president on 28 July, despite the fact that he acknowledged, prior to his departure for Spain, that Nicolás Maduro Moros had obtained the majority of votes in the elections.

Also, former candidate González Urrutia expressed his intentions to return to Venezuela as soon as possible to assume the presidency on January 10.

However, as a political asylum seeker, in line with the efforts made by the Governments of Venezuela and Spain, his intentions are contrary to international standards, including the Vienna Convention.

On the subject, the president of the National Assembly of Venezuela, Jorge Rodríguez, denounced in his account of the social network Instagram that González Urrutia, “the same day he applies for asylum to the Government of Spain, violates the rules of asylum. Ask for silver double and mandoble. Lie in writing, lie when he speaks”.

Following the violent events promoted by the Venezuelan ultra-right after the presidential elections, on July 29, González Urrutia secretly took refuge in the Netherlands embassy in Venezuela, as confirmed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, Caspar Veldkamp.

He then left Venezuela of his own free will on the night of 7 September, at the Spanish embassy, after being granted a safe-conduct by the Bolivarian government.

Previously, he held meetings with the executive vice president and the president of the National Assembly of Venezuela, Jorge Rodríguez, where he signed the letter recognizing the decision of the Electoral Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ), the victory of Nicolás Maduro and the five powers of the state enshrined in the Venezuelan Constitution.

However, upon arrival in Spain he offered statements where he stated that the letter was signed under duress.

In response to this fact, the president of the parliament, Jorge Rodríguez, showed evidence that confirms that there was no coercion during the meeting at the Spanish diplomatic headquarters in Caracas, by the representatives of the Venezuelan government present.
