The environmental activists warned that exceeding 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels will trigger catastrophic cycles.
On Monday night, two activists from the group ‘Just Stop Oil’ disrupted a performance of The Tempest, starring actress Sigourney Weaver, to demand that the British government end fossil fuel burning by 2030.

The two protesters climbed onto the stage at London’s Drury Lane Theatre holding a banner that read, “More than 1.5 degrees is a global shipwreck,” after it was revealed that 2024 marked the first full year above the safe limit of 1.5 degrees Celsius for global temperature rise.
“In 2024, we won our demand to end all new oil and gas, but the fight isn’t over. We have already passed 1.5C of warming, and we know we can’t afford to stop after this initial win. In 2025, we are taking to the streets once again to strive for more,” Just Stop Oil stated on its website.
“We’re going to reclaim parliament for the people, reclaiming it from the billionaires and the corporate interests that it serves. Reclaiming it from our current system, which places profit above all else.”
“We aim to provide a spark—the spark that’s needed to protect our communities and stop the extraction and burning of fossil fuels by 2030. We will send our message loud and clear: the system will fail sooner or later. We can determine what comes next,” the environmental group added.
Weaver, who was seated on a chair on stage at the time of the protest, was immediately escorted off by theater staff. The Just Stop Oil protest was met with boos from the audience but also some applause, before the activists were removed from the stage.
The two protesters—a 42-year-old woman and a 60-year-old man—were arrested on suspicion of aggravated trespass, according to London’s Metropolitan Police. The protesters who stormed the stage were identified as Hayley Walsh, a mother of three, and mechanical engineer Richard Weir.
‘Just Stop Oil’ emphasizes that scientists warn exceeding 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels will trigger catastrophic cycles that threaten the stability of all life on Earth.
