The Kenyan Senate on Thursday formally removed 59-year-old Vice President Rigathi Gachagua from office after two days of impeachment for judicial charges.

The event has been described as “unprecedented in Kenyan history”. Gachagua was charged with 11 counts, of which he was found guilty of five: corruption, promotion of ethnic discrimination, insubordination, intimidation and humiliation of public officials.
During the trial, more than 45 senators supported the accusations made against the impeached, who could not defend himself because he was convalescing from intense chest pain.
Despite the ruling of the Senate, some legislators, far from condemning the vice president, supported him.
Since 8 October, the National Assembly of Kenya has supported the dismissal of Gachagua on charges of abuse of power. Indeed, more than two-thirds of the House voted in favour of the measure.
The post left by Gachagua will be filled by the former Minister of the Interior, Kithure Kindiki, who was already appointed by a majority vote of the National Assembly of the African country.
It should be noted that, on several occasions, the legislators of the national Asmablea had already cited the accumulation of assets of Gachagua, for about 40 million dollars, when his annual salary was 93 thousand dollars.
