According to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), approximately 18,000 refugees and returnees fleeing the ongoing conflict in Sudan have sought refuge in the Korsi Refugee Camp, located in a neighborhood of Birao, in the Vakaga region of eastern Central African Republic.

This region, situated near the Sudanese border, has become a critical haven for those escaping violence, many of whom have endured traumatic journeys marked by abuse, including sexual violence.

In response to the urgent needs of these refugees, UNFPA, in collaboration with its partners, provides essential gender-based violence (GBV) services within the camp and offers sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services at a nearby health facility in Birao.

The clinic delivers a comprehensive range of health services, including reproductive and maternal healthcare, emergency obstetric care, GBV case management, and psychosocial support aimed at helping survivors of sexual violence begin their healing process. UNFPA supports this clinic by funding the salaries of a midwife and nurse while also supplying medical equipment and necessary supplies.

The camp’s proximity to Birao allows residents to integrate more easily with the host community compared to other camps that are more isolated. Refugees can engage in income-generating activities such as embroidery and baking. Once their products are ready, women sell baked goods and handmade crafts in the town market, which helps restore some degree of independence and self-reliance.

However, life in Korsi is fraught with challenges. Residents face severe shortages of food and water. Women are particularly vulnerable to gender-based violence when collecting firewood for cooking. Employment opportunities are scarce, making it difficult for women to earn enough to feed themselves and their families. Malnutrition is widespread among children, exacerbated by insufficient cash transfer programs that fail to meet basic needs.

Immediate and expanded assistance is desperately needed to support Sudanese refugees who are seeking safety and stability amid ongoing turmoil. The situation calls for urgent action from humanitarian organizations and governments to address these critical needs effectively.
