“I can neither confirm nor deny it,” said Dmitry Peskov, spokesperson for the Russian Presidency, regarding a conversation in which both leaders reportedly discussed the war in Ukraine.
“As the Washington Administration progresses in its work, many diverse communication channels are established… Due to the multiplicity of these communications, I might not personally be aware of some things,” he added.
In an interview published in The New York Times on Saturday, however Trump claimed that he had already spoken with Putin and noted that the Russian leader “wants the people to stop dying.”
The Republican politician also said it is “better not to say” how many times he has spoken with his Russian counterpart but emphasized that he has “a good relationship” with him. Trump also expressed hope that the Ukrainian war would end quickly.
So far, Moscow has denied any such conversation. At the end of January, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov stated that this is an issue that “practically arises every day, and daily we give the same answer: there is no progress… The restoration of political dialogue is undoubtedly necessary.”
Yuri Ushakov, the Kremlin’s advisor on international affairs, also asserted that it should be the incoming U.S. administration that takes the initiative.
