The presidents of Bolivia and Colombia, Luis Arce and Gustavo Petro, respectively, have expressed their satisfaction with the decision by U.S. President Joe Biden to remove Cuba from the list of countries that promote terrorism.

This measure has been considered a significant advance in relations between the United States and Latin America, as well as a step toward the removal of the economic blockade imposed on the island.

Bolivian President Luis Arce celebrated Biden’s decision as a triumph of “reason, truth, and justice.” On his social media, Arce stressed that Cuba was included on that list “in a unilateral, arbitrary, and infamous way” in 2021.

For him, this action not only recognizes the sovereignty of the Cuban people but also paves the way for the “indispensable removal” of the economic blockade that has affected the island for more than six decades.

Arce emphasized that the end of the blockade has been called for on multiple occasions by the international community through resolutions in the U.N. General Assembly.

For his part, Colombian President Gustavo Petro also applauded Biden’s decision, calling it a “breakthrough.” In a message posted on his X account (formerly Twitter), Petro pointed out that the United States has two ways of relating to Latin America: through dialogue and respect for diversity, or through imposition.

The Colombian leader expressed his support for Biden’s approach to dialogue and diversity in the region, saying that lifting blockades, even partially, represents significant progress.

Both leaders agree that the recognition of sovereignty and mutual respect are fundamental to achieving lasting peace and effective social justice in Latin America.
