Lebanon Condemns Israel’s Repeated Attacks on UNIFIL Positions

On Monday, the Lebanese Foreign Affairs Ministry condemned Israel’s repeated attacks on personnel and positions of the United Nations Interim Force In Lebanon (UNIFIL), calling on the international community to take a firm stance to support peacekeeping forces.

“These attacks and actions do not merely represent targeting international forces, but also constitute a flagrant violation of international law and international humanitarian law, and may amount to a war crime,” the Lebanese ministry stated, urging the international community to safeguard UNIFIL’s operations, ensuring their security is neither compromised nor threatened.
The Lebanese diplomats also called for the condemnation of Israel and demanded an immediate halt to its hostile actions against the peacekeeping forces.
In recent days, Israeli forces have repeatedly targeted UNIFIL positions in southern Lebanon, resulting in injuries to peacekeepers and drawing international criticism. Yesterday, an Israeli bulldozer demolished an observation tower and perimeter fence at a UNIFIL post in the southern Lebanese town of Marwahin.
On Monday, Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Abulgueit demanded the immediate withdrawal of Israeli troops from southern Lebanon, where they launched a ground invasion earlier this month under the pretext of destroying the capabilities of the Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah.
“I have confirmed the importance of the immediate withdrawal from all Lebanese territory that was invaded by the Israeli occupation,” said the head of the pan-Arab organization, who met in Beirut with the speaker of the Lebanese Parliament, Nabih Berri, the main interlocutor between Hezbollah and the governments of the Middle East.
Albulgueit also described as “regrettable” the attacks by Israeli forces against the positions of UNIFIL, which in recent weeks has been the target of a series of actions that have even caused injuries and unleashed a wave of condemnation at the international level.
