The Lebanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Migrants announced today that the country’s Permanent Mission to UNESCO is intensifying its efforts to safeguard Lebanon’s archaeological and cultural sites from recent Israeli attacks.
The mission has requested an emergency meeting of a committee specializing in heritage protection, as well as an official UNESCO statement urging all parties involved to take concrete measures to protect archaeological, cultural, historical, and natural sites.
This initiative follows the recent evacuation order issued by Israeli forces to residents of Baalbek, raising alarms about a possible attack on the Baalbek temple, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Since the beginning of intense Israeli attacks on Lebanon on September 23, Baalbek has been the target of multiple bombardments by Israeli warplanes, raising concerns about the safety of its invaluable cultural heritage.
The Ministry, together with Lebanese diplomatic missions, reaffirmed its commitment to urge the international community to cooperate with Lebanon in protecting its archaeological and cultural sites, emphasizing the urgent need to preserve the country’s historical heritage in the face of growing threats.
