Lithuanian Opposition Party Wins 1st Round of Parliamentary Elections

The Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (LSDP) has proclaimed its victory in the legislative elections, following the second round held this Sunday. This electoral event is significant as it took place amid geopolitical tensions in the region.

With the counting of 1,652 out of 1,685 polling stations, the LSDP, led by Vilija Blinkevičiūtė, positions itself as the largest force in the Seimas, Lithuania’s unicameral parliament.

They are expected to secure around 50 seats out of a total of 141, enabling them to form a government coalition with two other centrist parties currently in opposition.

“The Social Democratic Party of Lithuania (LSDP) has been officially declared the winner of the parliamentary elections, the second round of which took place this Sunday in the Baltic country bordering Russia and Belarus

Blinkevičiūtė emphasized that the results reflect a desire for change among Lithuanians, stating: “People want a completely different government, regardless of where they live.”

However, she did not confirm whether she would take on the role of prime minister or if another party member would be appointed to that position.

The leader of the conservative Homeland Union-Lithuanian Christian Democrats (TS-LKD), Gabrielius Landsbergis, acknowledged his defeat and expressed hope that the LSDP would form a “responsible government.”

In this second round, only 63 seats were decided in districts where no candidate had surpassed 40% in the first round.
