Magnitude 7 Earthquake in Peru Left 14 Wounded People

Five of the wounded belong to the district of Yauca, one in Atiquipa and eight in Acarí.

The Regional Emergency Operations Center (COER) of the Peruvian province of Arequipa confirmed on Friday that the number of injured by the magnitude 7.0 earthquake occurred in that region rose to 14 people.

In that regard, it was detailed that five of the wounded belong to the district of Yauca, one from Atiquipa and eight from Acari.

In statements offered to local media, the governor of Arequipa Rohel Sánchez, confirmed that «all people have been discharged, they have been very slightly injured by the same movement».

Also, 14 houses were reported affected, six in Yauca, three in Cahuacho, three in Acarí and two in Bella Unión. «None of the houses need demolition actions. They are minor damages in relation to it», Sánchez said.

Regarding road infrastructure, two bridges were affected, one in Chala and one in Huanuhuanu; while six educational institutions were damaged by cracks, two in Yauca, and the same number in Jaquí and Bella Unión.

In Jaquí, the drinking water network was affected by 20 per cent; in turn, Atiquipa and Lomas damaged electrical service and 0.4 kilometres of roads were damaged in Caraveli, Chaparra, Huanuhuanu, Jaquí and Acarí.

In Atiquipa 100 percent is without electricity and in the district of Lomas as well. For the rest, we can say that the communication routes, for example the Pan American South, are 100 percent operational. This inventory of effects that we disclose are not high risk but minor», said the governor of the region.

For its part, COER noted the existence of advanced warehouses in the districts of Acarí, Caravelí, Atico and Quicacha with sufficient supplies to cover the needs of the population.

The earthquake occurred at 12H36 (local time) 54 kilometers south west of Yauca, in Caravelí, located in the province of Arequipa.
