On October 15, authorities in Colombia seized more than a ton of cocaine linked to the guerrilla group National Liberation Army (ELN) and dismantled a complex capable of producing up to four tons of narcotics. The operation took place in the Norte de Santander region, specifically in the rural area of Cúcuta.
Officials confirmed the discovery and destruction of a coca processing facility operated by the ELN’s Reinaldo Ardila Gómez Urban Front, which contained over a ton of cocaine hydrochloride.
The site was found to have solid cocaine, suspended cocaine base, and a variety of liquid chemicals including acetone, gasoline, hydrochloric acid, lime, caustic soda, and charcoal, all integral to the drug production process.
The complex was reportedly capable of producing up to four tons of cocaine per month, based on findings at the site. The successful operation was a result of coordinated efforts between the police and military.
In the past 24 months, Colombian authorities have confiscated a total of 1,460 tons of cocaine, according to the Ministry of Defense. Last year alone saw seizures totaling 746.3 tons, while 2024 has already recorded 491 tons, representing a 16% increase compared to the previous years.
