Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced plans to construct a school, a hospital, and a mosque in Gaza as part of an initial effort to aid in the reconstruction of the besieged Palestinian territory, which has been devastated by nearly 15 months of Israeli military assaults and indiscriminate bombings.

In a video posted on his social media, Anwar explained that the reconstruction efforts will involve cooperation with the Japanese government, as well as contributions from Malaysian citizens and the private sector.

“Thanks to the efforts of the government and the Foreign Minister, we have received confirmation to accelerate the implementation of the East Asian Countries’ Program for Gaza Reconstruction (CEAPAD), which aims to establish and launch funding initiatives through Asian-led efforts,” Anwar stated.

He further emphasized, “On behalf of Malaysia, I believe that, alongside our people and in collaboration with the private sector, we will begin by building a school, a hospital, and a mosque as a testament to our society’s sacrifice and solidarity with Palestine.”

The reconstruction of Gaza, which has been nearly obliterated due to relentless Israeli attacks since October 2023, is estimated to cost over $1 trillion (4.5 trillion Malaysian ringgit).

Regional Cooperation for Palestine

Malaysia’s Parliament, along with Qatar, has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Palestinian cause, coordinating joint positions, and strengthening regional and international cooperation.

A statement from Malaysia’s Parliament confirmed that the agreement was solidified during a courtesy visit by National Assembly Speaker Datuk Awang Bemee Awang Ali Basah to Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammad Abdulrahman Jassim Al Thani in Doha on Tuesday.

In addition to Qatar, the Indonesian government has also expressed its willingness to contribute to Gaza’s reconstruction. The besieged Palestinian enclave, now experiencing its first days of ceasefire following Israel’s brutal military aggression, has suffered catastrophic losses, with nearly 47,300 Palestinians killed, over 111,000 injured, tens of thousands missing, and widespread devastation across the territory.
