He has a reputation for strong economic management, having led the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England.
On Friday, economist Mark Carney became the 24th Prime Minister of Canada, replacing Justin Trudeau. Shortly before Carney’s swearing-in ceremony, Trudeau met privately with Governor General Mary Simon, who serves as head of state on behalf of the British monarch, to formally submit his resignation after more than nine years as Prime Minister.

On the same Friday, the members of Carney’s cabinet were also sworn in before Simon. His cabinet retains many ministers from Trudeau’s previous government (2015–2025).
The new head of the Canadian government comes to power with a reputation for strong economic management, having led the Bank of Canada (2008–2013) and the Bank of England (2013–2020).
“Today, we’re building a government that meets the moment. Canadians expect action — and that’s what this team will deliver. A smaller, experienced cabinet that moves faster, secures our economy, and protects Canada’s future,” he posted on social media.
On Sunday, after being declared the new leader of the Liberal Party with nearly 86% of the votes cast, Carney dedicated much of his speech to denouncing U.S. President Donald Trump’s attacks on the Canadian economy and sovereignty.
One of the first decisions he must make as Prime Minister is whether to dissolve Parliament and call an immediate election, as the general elections are scheduled for October of this year.
The Canadian Liberals hold a minority in the House of Commons, meaning that a coalition of the three main opposition parties—the Conservative Party, the social-democratic New Democratic Party, and the separatist Bloc Quebecois—could pass a motion of no confidence and trigger early elections.
