Mauritania: Ould Cheikh Ghazouani received 56% of the votes

With ballots from over 90% of polling stations counted by Sunday afternoon, Ghazouani had garnered 56% of the vote, according to a tally on the Independent National Electoral Commission’s website.
Mohamed Ould Cheikh Ghazouani is heading to win a second term, while candidate Biram Dah Abeid called for peaceful civil disobedience in protest against what he described as “electoral fraud.”

Biram Dah Abeid, a prominent anti-slavery activist who came second in the 2019 presidential election, received 23% of the vote, according to the latest tally.
The Independent Election Commission said, according to the Arab World News Agency, that these results come after counting 3,225 offices out of 4,503 offices, meaning that the counting rate reached 81%.
The committee’s spokesman, Muhammad Taqi Allah Al-Adham, had said that the final results would appear within hours, stressing that the electoral process took place in a calm atmosphere, and no significant violations were recorded.
Meanwhile, candidate Biram Dah Ould Abeid said in a press conference that these elections represent the strongest blow to the ruling regime in Mauritania in fifty years, calling for peaceful civil disobedience to protest what he called “election fraud.”
Al-Dah Abid said during a visit to one of his campaign headquarters in the capital, Nouakchott, that these elections were “marred by fraud, and do not reflect the people’s choice,” indicating that he does not recognize these results, nor does he recognize the Independent National Elections Commission.
He also confirmed that he would not recognize Mohamed Ould Sheikh Al-Ghazouani as president of the country for the next five years, stressing that he “has lost legitimacy and succeeded in fraud,” as he put it.
He added that the regime was defeated in the ballot boxes, which it controlled, noting that the Mauritanian people voted in a punitive manner against the regime, which lost control in areas that were traditionally supportive of it.
He also called on the Independent Election Commission to stop misleading and present the results in a transparent manner.
The vote counting process began immediately after the polling stations closed at seven o’clock local time, after a long day of voting that witnessed heavy turnout in the last hours of the day.
