“May God grant that the next pope be like Francis — with the same religious commitment, the same dedication to fighting inequality as Pope Francis,” the leader of the Workers’ Party said after the pontiff’s funeral.
Lula praised Francis’ personal and religious character and emphasized his commitment to the disadvantaged in brief statements to Brazilian media before leaving Rome.
The Brazilian leader also referred to the meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at Saint Peter’s Basilica, on the sidelines of the pontiff’s funeral.
Lula avoided speculating about the possible outcome of the meeting but stressed that “the important thing is to have dialogue to find a way out of this war, which is becoming harder and harder to explain, which no one can explain anymore.”
On Saturday, around 60 heads of state and government attended the funeral of Pope Francis, the first Latin American pontiff, who passed away on Monday at the age of 88.
