In a solemn session at the Mexican Chamber of Deputies, the Partido del Trabajo (PT) party strongly opposed the presence of Rachid Talbi El Alami, Speaker of the House of Representatives of Morocco, accusing the Moroccan kingdom of implementing oppressive policies and genocide against the Sahrawi people, who are celebrating the 49th anniversary of their independence this Thursday.
Congresswoman Margarita García García from the PT, who also chairs the Mexico-SADR (Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic) Friendship Group, described El Alami’s visit as an “act that violates human rights” and referred to him as a “representative of an oppressive kingdom”. She expressed solidarity with the Sahrawi people and condemned the genocidal acts and repressive policies carried out by Morocco in Western Sahara.
García García pointed out that for over 50 years, the Moroccan monarchy has ignored 74 United Nations resolutions calling for a referendum on self-determination for Western Sahara. In this context, she demanded free and democratic elections to allow the Sahrawi people to exercise their right to self-determination and sovereignty.
In protest, the PT formally requested the suspension of the session, as recorded in official legislative documents. Additionally, El Alami was prevented from taking the podium for a few minutes, and some lawmakers booed the Moroccan delegation.
Gerardo Fernández Noroña, President of the Mexican Senate, reaffirmed Mexico’s support for the SADR during a parliamentary meeting in Honduras days earlier, emphasizing respect for its sovereignty and borders.
The Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR) declared its independence on February 27, 1976, following Spain’s withdrawal from Western Sahara, its former colony. Morocco then illegally annexed a significant portion of this territory, and today occupies two-thirds of Western Sahara.
The Polisario Front, which leads the struggle for Western Sahara’s independence, recently reiterated that the Sahrawi people will not renounce their inalienable right to self-determination and will continue their resistance by all legitimate means, including armed struggle.
Despite the tensions, Mexico and Morocco have maintained bilateral relations for over 60 years, founded on principles of mutual respect, sovereignty, and international cooperation.
