Lopez Obrador reiterated that US agencies finance opposition activities in Mexico.

On Monday, Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO) revealed the contents of a letter he sent to U.S. President Joe Biden on Friday, asking him to stop U.S. funding for Mexican non-governmental organizations.

“On this occasion I address you to inform you that for some time I have been publicly denouncing those from the U.S. government who have maintained an attitude, clearly, interferenceist by financing part of the activities carried out by the self-called organization Mexicans Against Corruption and Impunity (MCCI), whose main purpose has been to attack our government,” AMLO stated.

Lopez Obrador asserted that between 2018 and 2023, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) allocated US$5.91 million to MCCI, which he considers completely offensive.

“Even though it is a relatively minor amount, this action is completely offensive and contrary to the respectful relations between our sovereignties, which you and I have been cultivating for the benefit of our nations,” President AMLO said.

“Excuse me for treating this issue directly, believe me that I esteem you and I do not want to bother you in any way, but as you will understand, the issues related to the freedom and independence of peoples go beyond personal feelings,” he concluded.

Last week, Mexico’s Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF) revealed that MCCI receives money from the United States. Between 2016 and 2023, MCCI received donations totaling approximately US$26.7 million. Of this amount, at least US$690,000 came from U.S. accounts.

In 2023, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) admitted to funding MCCI with over US$6 million. This Mexican NGO was founded by Claudio Gonzalez, a right-wing businessman opposed to the Lopez Obrador administration.
