“We had a very cordial call with President-elect Donald Trump, during which we discussed the good relationship that will exist between Mexico and the U.S.,” Sheinbaum posted on X.
During her morning press conference, Sheinbaum announced that she had sent a letter to Trump, expressing her intention to personally congratulate him on his victory. In response, Trump’s team suggested a phone conversation.
Trump returns to the White House with a package of controversial public policy proposals, including the repatriation of undocumented individuals and the closing of borders. He also threatens to increase tariffs on Mexican products if the flow of “criminals and drugs” from Mexico to the U.S. is not stopped.
Sheinbaum’s first reaction to Trump’s victory came on Wednesday, when she offered a reassuring message, expressing confidence that both countries would continue to maintain a good relationship.
“To Mexican businesspeople and to our compatriots and their families, I say there is no reason for concern,” the Leftist president stressed.
On Wednesday, Donald Trump declared himself the winner of the 2024 elections. He will return to the White House after a contested campaign and will become the 47th president of the country.
