Mexican President-Elect Sheinbaum Rejects Interventionism in Venezuela

“We should wait for the final tally, make the voting transparent, and leave self-determination to the Venezuelans,” she said.

On Tuesday, Mexican President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum made some comments about the situation in Venezuela after the 2024 presidential elections carried out on July 28.

“I heard that 80 percent of the votes had already been counted. We should wait for the final tally, make the voting transparent, and leave self-determination to the Venezuelan people,” she said, echoing the words of Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO).

“At the same time, I hope there is no violence and everything remains peaceful… Venezuela is a free and sovereign country. The self-determination of the Venezuelan people must be recognized,” Sheinbaum stressed during a press conference.

Mexico’s president-elect also questioned the international attention given to the Venezuelan elections, especially a statement from the Organization of American States (OAS) for labeling the election prematurely.

Right-Wing Violence in Venezuela after Presidential Elections

According to the Venezuelan National Electoral Council’s official data, President Nicolas Maduro received 51.2 percent of the votes in the July 28 elections. The opposition candidate Edmundo Gonzales came in second place with 44.2 percent of the votes.

Under the call of far-right politician Maria Corina Machado, who alleges the existence of supposed fraud, violent opposition sectors carried out vandalism in some localities of Venezuela on Monday.

Official information collected so far reveals that the far-right violent actions have caused these damages: 749 citizens accused of inciting hatred, vandalism, and terrorism; dozens of minors arrested in flagrante delicto; 1 soldier killed in the state of Aragua; 23 soldiers injured; 25 police officers injured; and 6 statues destroyed in the states of Carabobo, La Guaira, Falcon, Guarico, Portuguesa, and Trujillo.

Venezuelan authorities also recorded attacks on electoral facilities, buildings, and military and police centers; 2 mayors’ offices in the state of Anzoategui burned; 1 hospital harassed in Caracas; land and rail transport units damaged in the states of Miranda, Carabobo, and Lara; and some Metrobus stops and stations destroyed in Caracas.
