‘Anyone who thinks there are other mechanisms to stop the judicial reform is very mistaken,’ Sheinbaum emphasized.
On Thursday, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum questioned the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) for holding a hearing to hear arguments against the new judicial reform.

“I am struck by its speed. There are cases that take years for the Inter-American Commission to address. Now, however, the reform to the Judiciary didn’t even take weeks to be heard. So much interest!” she said.
Previously, the National Association of Circuit Magistrates and District Judges of the Federal Judiciary (JUFED) filed a complaint with the IACHR to stop the judicial reform that former President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (2018–2021) enacted on September 15.
Thanks to the judicial reform, Mexican citizens will be able to directly elect judges starting in 2025. However, judges and judicial workers argue that this reform violates their human rights by impacting the judicial career path and allowing the Executive branch interference in the judiciary.
“There is no violation of any human right… Mexico is a free, sovereign, and independent country where, according to the Constitution, the Mexican people determine what the constitutional reforms are,” President Sheinbaum said.
“The Mexican people will have more justice and greater access to justice,” she emphasized, highlighting that the judicial reform seeks to eliminate pressure groups embedded in the judiciary for decades.
The reform to the Judiciary triggered dozens of injunctions and rulings by judges against the initiative. The Sheinbaum administration dismissed these complaints, given that the final text of the judicial reform was approved with a two-thirds majority in both chambers of Congress.
“The judicial reform is now constitutional. Anyone who thinks there are other mechanisms to stop the judicial reform is very mistaken. On June 1, 2025, there will be elections in Mexico, and that will happen by decision of the Mexican people,” Sheinbaum emphasized.
