Previously, the U.S. Secretary of Commerce confirmed that tariffs on Mexican products would take effect on March 4.
On Sunday, two days before U.S. President Donald Trump imposes tariffs on Mexico, President Claudia Sheinbaum emphasized that the only way to combat drug trafficking is through cooperation between both nations. She also stressed that Mexico must be treated as an equal and not as a country subjected to policies imposed from Washington.

“Cooperation and coordination, yes; subordination, never,” Sheinbaum stated after the U.S. Secretary of Commerce, Howard Lutnick, confirmed that tariffs on Mexican products would take effect on March 4.
Since his return to the White House on January 20, Trump has threatened to impose 25% tariffs on Mexico and Canada, with whom he will also review the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) next year.
The tariffs, which had been scheduled to take effect at the beginning of February, were postponed until March 4 amid the U.S. government’s demands for greater intervention by Mexican authorities in the fight against organized crime and migration.
Sheinbaum reiterated that her government will not allow any interference that undermines national sovereignty and emphasized that the relationship with the United States must be based on principles of mutual collaboration rather than imposition.
“Let the people of Mexico and the entire world also know that Mexico is a great country of brave men and women, that we are a free, independent, and sovereign nation, and that Mexico is respected anywhere in the world,” she declared.
Furthermore, Sheinbaum reaffirmed that her administration is committed to the fight against organized crime and drug trafficking but always on its own terms and without accepting external pressures that compromise the country’s autonomy.
Since the beginning of her term, Sheinbaum has maintained the stance of continuing the security strategy focused on addressing the root causes of violence and strengthening institutions, in line with the policy implemented by her predecessor, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.
