Among those invited to the historic ceremony are Presidents Gabriel Boric (Chile), Luis Arce (Bolivia), Luis Abinader (Dominican Republic), Lula da Silva (Brazil), and Miguel Diaz-Canel (Cuba).

Mexico will become one of the first nations on the continent to be governed by a woman. Claudia Sheinbaum, an energy scientist and former Mayor of Mexico City, will take the reins of the country after achieving a landslide victory in the June 2 elections.

Her political career began during an informal meeting with Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO) in 2000, although she had already been involved in student movements before then. In addition to serving as Mayor of Mexico City, Sheinbaum also held the position of head of the Tlalpan district.

“We are going to govern with the same principles and causes. The regime of corruption and privilege will not return. We will continue to govern with the maxim of Mexican humanism: For the good of all, the poor come first,” she said during the inauguration of infrastructure projects in the State of Nayarit.

Sheinbaum also announced that she will continue the welfare programs initiated by President AMLO, such as pensions for senior citizens, scholarships for students, and support for the agricultural sector. She will also promote new benefits for women aged 60 to 64; scholarships for students attending public schools; and home medical consultations for seniors.

“President AMLO gave us back something wonderful: the pride of being Mexican,” Sheinbaum said during her visit to Nayarit, where she thanked the outgoing president for always being very respectful of the decisions she made regarding her political work and career.

“I’m going to hand the presidential sash to an extraordinary woman, exceptional and academically more prepared than many of us here,” President AMLO remarked, referring to Sheinbaum, who received her PhD in energy engineering from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).
