‘The relationship with the U.S. must be one of equals,’ the Mexican leader stressed.
On Monday, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum promised not to bow her head before Donald Trump, who begins his second presidential term in the United States on Monday.

“Mexico has no reason to bow its head, to feel lesser, when we are a great country, a cultural power, and Mexicans are a hardworking, honest, fraternal, and supportive people. We have much to be proud of in front of the entire world,” she said.
The Mexican leader stated that her government is “ready” for the start of Trump’s second presidency, but she urged waiting to see what his first concrete measures will be, especially regarding immigration.
“My role is to be the representative of this great people. Our relationship with the United States will be one of equals and always in defense of Mexicans living in the U.S.,” she declared.
Previously, Trump had warned that one of his first orders would be to impose a 25% tariff on Mexican products if Mexico “does not stop the invasion” of migrants and fentanyl.
Hours before his inauguration, Trump’s team also revealed that he will dedicate his first executive orders to “seal” the border with a military deployment and will reinstate the controversial “Remain in Mexico” program, which forces U.S. asylum seekers to wait for their proceedings in Mexican territory.
Despite this, Sheinbaum expressed confidence that there will be agreements on matters such as “migration, recognizing the work of Mexicans in the U.S., issues of drug trafficking, weapons crossing from the U.S. to Mexico, cultural matters, and, of course, trade issues.”
“The moment will come, we hope soon, for dialogue and collaboration where our teams can meet to reach agreements on various issues,” she stated.
