Authorities in Saint Kitts and Nevis confirmed this Thursday the discovery of a canoe carrying 19 decomposing bodies off their coast.
According to initial investigations, the deceased are believed to be migrants from West Africa, with evidence suggesting that at least some of them were from Mali, based on identification documents found on the vessel.
The boat was located by the Coast Guard near the island of Nevis and later towed to Saint Kitts for inspection. Police and forensic teams are working to identify the victims and determine the circumstances that led to this tragedy.
Although the intended destination of the journey has not been confirmed, it is suspected that the canoe may have been attempting to reach the Canary Islands in Spain, a migratory route notorious for its dangers.
Deputy Police Commissioner Cromwell Henry explained that the bodies were in an advanced state of decomposition, making identification and the determination of whether there were minors among the deceased difficult.
Initially, 13 bodies were reported, but the number was later revised to 19 after a more thorough examination.
This incident adds to another similar case recently reported in the Caribbean, where a canoe with at least five bodies was found off the coast of Trinidad and Tobago.
The Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard suggested that both vessels could be linked to attempts by West African migrants to reach Europe, a journey that is often desperate and deadly.
Authorities in Saint Kitts and Nevis continue to investigate the case, while humanitarian organizations have expressed concern over the rising number of deaths on dangerous migration routes.
This tragic event highlights the risks faced by thousands of people attempting to seek a better life far from their countries of origin.
