His actions on the Malvinas Issue have been characterized by over-ideologization, defunding, and diplomatic malpractice.
On the occasion of the 43rd anniversary of the start of the Malvinas War, former Argentine President Cristina Fernandez- Kirchner criticized President Javier Milei for yielding to the interests of foreign powers and weakening Argentina’s historic defense of its sovereignty over the Malvinas Islands.

Argentines Remember the Malvinas War’s Heroes
On the Day of the Veteran and the Fallen in the Malvinas War, she posted on social media excerpts from an extensive document prepared by the Justicialist Party (PJ), the organization she currently leads and which embodies the Peronist movement. The paragraphs shared by the leftist leader read as follows:
“Over-ideologization, defunding, and diplomatic malpractice summarize the actions taken so far by the Milei administration concerning the Malvinas Issue. These decisions run counter to our national policy in a global context of critical conflicts and an accelerating dispute over control of the South Atlantic and Antarctic projection.
Without a strong commitment to consolidating Argentina’s presence and projection in the southern region, without strengthening the defense and deterrence capabilities necessary to guarantee our national integrity and sovereignty, and without an active and assertive diplomacy, Argentina will be at the mercy of the ambitions of major world powers and will be a passive witness to the accelerated deterioration of its position regarding the Malvinas Issue. Relearning the lessons of our history can help us reverse the critical process we have suffered over the past year.
On this April 2nd, the Day of the Veterans and Fallen in the Malvinas War, we honor and recognize those who lost their lives during the South Atlantic conflict and the men and women who suffered the consequences of the war and still endure its aftermath today.
The best way to pay tribute to them is and will always be to uphold the national policy on the Malvinas Issue as a national cause and to raise high the flags of a free, just, and sovereign Argentina. Glory and honor to the combatants and fallen in the Malvinas War!” the Justicialist Party document stated.
Earlier on Wednesday, during an event supposedly aimed at honoring Argentine soldiers, President Milei said he hopes that the inhabitants of the Malvinas will want to join Argentina once his country becomes prosperous in the future.
“That’s why we aim to become a global power—so that they will prefer to be Argentine, and there won’t even be a need for deterrence or persuasion to achieve it,” said the far-right politician, who is an outspoken admirer of Margaret Thatcher, the former British prime minister who initiated the 1982 war to seize the Malvinas by force.
Reactions to the symbolic implications of his statements were swift. “So now we’re going to ask the representatives of the colonial power if they’d rather be Argentine?” asked Senator Martin Lousteau sarcastically, criticizing Milei’s statement for “undermining the country’s legitimate claim and insulting the former combatants.”
