Mohamed Ould Cheikh Ghazouan Wins Re-election in Mauritania

The opposition candidate announced that he would not recognize the results, since he affirmed that the electoral commission is manipulated by the power.

Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani won re-election in the presidential elections of 29 June, obtaining 56.12 percent of the vote, according to the provisional results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI).

Ghazouani came to power in 2019, in elections that marked the first democratic transfer of power in this country since France’s independence in 1960.

Biram Dah Abeid, the main opposition candidate, came in second with 22.10 percent of the vote, and Hamadi Mohamed Abdi, of the Tawassoul party, was third with 12.76 percent, CENI announced Sunday night.

According to CENI, 55.39 percent of the more than 1.9 million registered voters cast their vote last Saturday. Ghazouani was first elected president in 2019.

Candidate Biram Dah Abeid, who came in second, called for protests after a press conference. He challenged the CENI results. Demonstrations are observed in some neighborhoods of Nouakchott. According to CENI, the participation rate is 54.90% in this phase of the count.
