More than 11,000 residents of Los Angeles County have been able to return home after authorities lifted some evacuation orders in response to the devastating Palisades and Eaton fires, which have left at least 27 dead. Although conditions have improved, the situation remains critical as both fires remain active.

Mandatory evacuation zones have been reduced, allowing exclusive access to residents who must present a photo ID and a visible address to enter. This measure aims to prevent looting in the affected areas, as reported by ABC.

The Los Angeles County Coroner has so far confirmed a total of 27 fatalities, with 10 related to the Palisades fire and 17 to the Eaton fire. Firefighters have made significant progress in containing both fires.

The Palisades fire, which has destroyed more than 3,300 structures, is 31% contained, while the fire in Eaton, which has affected areas of Pasadena and Altadena, has reached 65% containment, according to the latest report from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire).

Despite progress, rescue teams continue to search for at least 31 missing persons since the start of the fires on January 7. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) Homicide Bureau has called on the community to help identify at least 17 of the missing.

The authorities have indicated that there is no significant expansion of the fires expected over the weekend. However, the National Weather Service (NWS) has warned of possible “critical weather conditions” between January 24 and 30 due to a new round of Santa Ana winds, which could further complicate the situation in the coming weeks.

The community is in a delicate process of recovery and hopes that weather conditions will remain favorable to prevent further outbreaks. Collaboration between residents and authorities will be key to overcoming this crisis.
