While the marches overall were to maintain the memory of the disappeared while denouncing the authorities, rights defenders also used the day to demand that the Federal Government approved a General Law against forced disappearances, which was recommended by the United Nations in 2015.

In states such as Veracruz or Guerrero – where the 43 Ayotzinapa students were disappeared by police in 2014 – families have organized brigades to search and dig in the countryside for the remains of the disappeared.
