On Sunday, Arcos’ decapitated body was found in Chilpancingo after residents reported to authorities the presence of a human head on the hood of a vehicle. Just a few days earlier, Arcos’ secretary general, Francisco Tapia, had also been murdered.

Arcos had taken office on September 30 after winning the election under the auspices of the opposition Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). After his swearing-in, he declared that his main commitment was to “ensure peace and security in the municipality,” and that he would do so “in coordination with the Mexican Army.”

The Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, Omar Garcia, revealed that Mayor Arcos was not under the protection of the National Guard at the time of his death, as he had not requested it.

The text reads, “Residents of Chilpancingo, Guerrero, sadly bid farewell to Alejandro Arcos Catalan, the mayor who was brutally murdered.”

“Requests are submitted to the Security Secretariat and forwarded to the corresponding areas, sometimes to the Defense Ministry, sometimes to other institutions. In this case, no security request had been made,” he explained, adding that he is in regular contact with the Guerrero Governor Evelyn Salgado.

“We are supporting the necessary investigations and will continue working to resolve this case and arrest those responsible,” Garcia emphasized. In recent years, criminal violence in the state of Guerrero has been increasing, with fierce ongoing disputes between organized crime groups over territorial control for drug trafficking, extortion, and other crimes.

According to the information collected so far by Mexican authorities, the mayor of Chilpancingo was traveling alone from Chilpancingo to Petaquillas on the day of his death. Currently, his murder is being investigated by the Attorney General’s Office.
