The Department of Fire Services of Myanmar reported via Facebook the discovery of five bodies in three different operations in the city of Mandalay -the most affected by the earthquake of magnitude 7.7 registered on March 28-, with the help of rescuers from Russia and China.
In one of these operations, Chinese and Burmese rescuers found the lifeless bodies of three children, while Russian rescuers found the bodies of two adults, who in all cases perished under the rubble, according to reports from firefighters.
The public channel MRTV reported that the country’s current military leader, Min Aung Hlaing, visited the city of Sagaing to inspect earthquake damage and ongoing rehabilitation work.
Both the fire brigade and the media in Myanmar have released several reports reporting on the repair work and distribution of aid, which is progressing despite logistical difficulties due to the collapse of some roads and bridges.
The country’s authorities explained that more than 150 tons of humanitarian aid from countries such as China, the US, Singapore, India and Thailand had entered the country since the earthquake, which caused widespread devastation in the centralNorth, where six regions were declared in emergency.
Military balances show the collapse or partial damage of at least 21,783 houses, 805 office buildings, 1,690 pagodas, 1,041 schools, 921 monasteries and convents, 312 religious buildings, 48 hospitals and clinics and 18 hectares of crops.
Min Aung Hlaing, in another article published this Sunday by the ruling newspaper ‘Global New Light of Myanmar’, confirmed the plan to build temporary schools to ensure that children return to school as soon as possible.
