On Wednesday, the Namibian polling stations opened their doors for general elections, in which citizens will vote if the ruling South-West Africa People’s Organization (SWAPO) remains at the head of the country, as it has been since the defeat of the South African apartheid regime in 1990.

Thousands of people have attended the polling stations in all 121 constituencies in the country, starting at 07:00 (local time). In this new election process, the Namibians choose their next President and 96 members of the National Assembly.
More than 1.4 million voters have registered for this Wednesday 27, while citizens of other countries already exercised their right to vote on 13 November.
A total of 15 candidates have been nominated for the Presidency, among the most prominent being Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, current vice president representing the SWAPO party. If she wins the election, Nandi-Ndaitwah would become the first woman president of the South African Cone.
The main rival of SWAPO is the candidate Panduleni Itula, who in the 2019 elections achieved almost 30 percent of the vote, being the best result of the opposition in Namibia.
These elections are called after Hage Geingob died in office in February. Subsequently, Vice President Nangolo Mbumba became the current Head of State.
Mbumba called for democratic and peaceful elections, maintaining “democratic traditions that we have ingrained by voting in large numbers for the leaders who want to entrust the eighth government of the Republic of Namibia”.
“Our independence and right to vote in determining our own destiny as a nation was the result of a long and bitter national struggle for freedom. It is a right that we do not take for granted and should not take for granted,” he said.
