Namibia’s First Female President, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, Takes Office

Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah made history on Friday as she was sworn in as Namibia’s first female president. Representing the South West Africa People’s Organization (SWAPO), she secured a decisive victory in last November’s elections, earning 58% of the vote.

In her inaugural address, Nandi-Ndaitwah expressed gratitude to the Namibian people for their trust, stating, “I am honored to serve as the fifth president of Namibia and to lead this great nation for the next five years.” She emphasized her administration’s commitment to “good governance” and called on public officials to uphold high ethical standards at all times.

A Vision for Progress

The president outlined her priorities, focusing on improving sanitation, addressing housing challenges, and advancing education reforms. She also pledged to combat corruption, which she described as a source of frustration for Namibians and a threat to the nation’s stability.

Nandi-Ndaitwah highlighted plans to boost investment in infrastructure development, aiming to attract foreign capital and enhance economic productivity. “By fostering economic growth, we can improve the quality of life for our people,” she affirmed.

Commitment to Peace and Solidarity

On the international front, the president reiterated Namibia’s dedication to peaceful conflict resolution. She reaffirmed the country’s support for the right to self-determination of the Palestinian people and the Sahrawi people of Western Sahara, emphasizing the importance of solidarity in achieving lasting peace.

With her historic inauguration, Nandi-Ndaitwah embarks on a journey to lead Namibia toward a future of inclusivity, progress, and ethical governance.
