NASA Rules Out Threat from Asteroid 2024 YR4 to Earth in 2032

The latest measurements have further reduced uncertainty about the future trajectory of 2024 YR4, moving its range of possible locations away from Earth by December 22, 2032. Feb 24, 2025 Photo: NASANET

However, NASA has slightly increased the probability of an impact on the Moon on the same date to 1.7%, though this is still considered a “very small” figure.

NASA confirmed this Monday that the asteroid 2024 YR4 will not pose a “significant threat” to Earth in 2032 or in the future, thanks to new calculations that have drastically reduced the likelihood of an impact. According to the U.S. space agency, the chance of the asteroid colliding with our planet has dropped to a surprising 0.004%.
In a statement posted on its X account, NASA explained that recent observations by its Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) have allowed experts to more accurately model the asteroid’s trajectory. This has led to the conclusion that there is no “significant potential” for impact in the next century.

Although the risk to Earth is virtually nonexistent, NASA will continue to monitor the asteroid to gather valuable information about its size and characteristics, which has important scientific implications.
